DriverGO

DRIVER COMMUNITY APPReal-time road intel powered by 70,000+ Hong Kong drivers

A community road-reporting platform built for DriveHub — speed-camera and incident alerts with voice prompts in Drive Mode, parking, fuel, toll and travel-time intel, and 3-second video reports. Launched in 2021 and rebuilt from the ground up as DriverGO 2.0 in 2026, now serving 70,000+ registered drivers.

Project Overview

// THE CLIENT

DriveHub Co., Limited runs DriverGO, Hong Kong's driver community — a tip-off platform where drivers warn each other about speed cameras, incidents and congestion. OnOn Technology built the product end-to-end as DriveHub's development partner.

// THE PRODUCT

A live picture of Hong Kong's roads, drawn by the community: reports with photos and 3-second clips, voice alerts in Drive Mode, and everyday utilities — parking discounts, fuel prices, tunnel tolls and live travel times.

// THE JOURNEY

Version 1 shipped in March 2021 and grew past 70,000 registered drivers. In 2026 we rebuilt it from the ground up as DriverGO 2.0 — a new React Native + Expo codebase, a new backend, and a redesigned brand to match.

From v1 to DriverGO 2.0

DriverGO started in March 2021 with a simple idea: drivers know the road best, so give them the fastest possible way to warn each other. The first generation paired a community reporting feed with voice alerts while driving, and bundled the utilities Hong Kong drivers actually use — parking discounts, fuel prices and EV chargers.

Five years and 70,000 drivers later, the product had outgrown its foundations. DriverGO 2.0 was a ground-up rebuild: a new React Native + Expo codebase, a geo-indexed reporting backend on AWS and MongoDB, and a reporting flow redesigned to get a hazard onto the map in seconds.

  • Ground-up rewrite on React Native + Expo
  • Redesigned 3-second video reporting flow
  • New utilities: tunnel tolls and live travel times
  • Geo-indexed report backend on AWS + MongoDB

Engineered for the Driver's Seat

A driving companion has an unusual constraint: it must be useful while the user cannot look at it. DriverGO leans on voice — alerts are read aloud as you approach a camera or incident, filtered by a heading-aware positioning engine that uses your direction and speed to warn only about hazards actually ahead of you, not reports on the opposite carriageway.

It also has to be a good citizen on the phone. Location keeps running in the background — even with the app closed — so alert delivery is carefully balanced against battery drain, and notifications respect the driver: customisable do-not-disturb windows, per-category preferences, and photo previews so a glance at the lock screen is enough.

Under the hood, every report lands in MongoDB with geospatial indexes for fast nearby-hazard queries, AWS handles media storage and fan-out push delivery through FCM and APNs, and Google Maps powers the live map, camera distances and travel-time boards.

What Drivers Get

FTR.01

DRIVE MODE VOICE ALERTS

Hands-free warnings for speed cameras, incidents and congestion as you approach them — eyes on the road, always.

FTR.02

3-SECOND VIDEO REPORTS

Capture a short clip and the location attaches automatically — a hazard is on the map before the next junction.

FTR.03

SPEED-CAMERA DATABASE

A community-maintained map of fixed and mobile cameras, sorted by distance and kept fresh by daily reports.

FTR.04

CROWD UPDATES

Any driver can confirm, update or clear an existing report, so the map reflects the road as it is right now.

FTR.05

TOLLS & TRAVEL TIMES

Cross-harbour tunnel pricing and live travel-time boards for the routes that matter.

FTR.06

PARKING, FUEL & EV

Parking discounts, petrol prices and EV chargers — the everyday intel that saves drivers real money.

BLK.08

Premium, Done Right

A subscription tier that sells comfort and precision — never safety. Core alerts stay free for every driver.

FTR.01

DARK THEME

A night-friendly interface for driving after sundown.

FTR.02

BACKGROUND ALERTS

Voice warnings keep firing with the screen off or another app in front.

FTR.03

CUSTOM DO-NOT-DISTURB

Quiet hours you define — alerts arrive only when you want them.

FTR.04

PERSONALISED ALERTS

Choose which report categories and distances deserve your attention.

FTR.05

LANDSCAPE MODE

A dashboard-friendly layout for phones mounted sideways.

FTR.06

3RD-GEN POSITIONING

A heading-aware location engine for more precise, better-timed warnings.

Project Q&A

DriveHub Co., Limited owns and operates DriverGO. OnOn Technology designed and built the product end-to-end across both generations — the mobile apps, the backend on AWS and MongoDB, and the Next.js marketing site.

After five years the v1 codebase had accumulated enough framework and dependency debt that every new feature shipped slower. A ground-up React Native + Expo rewrite modernised the reporting flow, unified iOS and Android behaviour in one codebase, and unlocked over-the-air updates for faster releases.

iPhone and iPad (iOS 15.1+) and Android — one React Native codebase covering both app stores, with over-the-air updates between releases.

Every report attaches its location automatically, nearby drivers can confirm or update it in one tap, and stale reports age out over time — so what you see on the map keeps matching what is actually on the road.
